Today, Microsoft has switched off Vacation Reply feature to prevent or fight spam in Hotmail. Windows Live Hotmail is a big brand name, having millions of users across the world.

Hotmail is being accessed in dozens of languages, on different web-browsers running on different operating systems. As Report says- 8 billion messages are processed everyday with 2.5 billion messages being delivered to the inbox (the difference between those two numbers is primarily blocked spam).

But the war is still on and Microsoft discovered that spammers were using Hotmail’s automatic vacation reply feature to send spam from their Hotmail accounts and decided to temporarily suspend the feature.

Krish Vitaldevara, Lead Program Manager, Windows Live Hotmail says-

In our fight against spam, we sometimes have to make hard choices, and we had to make one this week. We discovered that spammers were using Hotmail’s automatic vacation reply feature to send spam from their Hotmail accounts.

We decided to temporarily shut off the feature in order to shut down the spam. Of course, we know some of you like and use automatic  vacation replies to let people know when you can’t respond to e-mail for a while, and we’ll turn this feature back on as soon as we’ve worked out the best way to prevent it from being misused by spammers.

Removing this feature is going to cause me a lot of problems for my business and as a result I am now seriously going to look at migrating to gmail unless the facility is returned.

    Still not fixed ?!?

I just need the automatic response so I can change accounts, go to google, and let people know that I’ve got another account … can’t even do that … alternative solution?

It has been months since you suspended this feature. If it is not going to be returned, pay us the courtesy of letting us know so we can all migrate to gmail. I just rode behind a bus with a billboard saying Hotmail is for the new busy. I guess not. Your lack of consideration in this matter is insulting.

I tried to forward to a yahoo account, which does have a working vacation reply feature. It might have worked if Microsoft hadn’t limited forwarding to accounts
    ending with “hotmail.com”, “msn.com” or “live.com”.

Nice going guys. Not only don’t you fix the problem, but you prevent your users from implementing work-arounds. I find this situation extremely irritating.

Yeah I tried the same. Either allow us to use basic features like vacation response or don’t be so restrictive about forwarding! This is quite inconvenient.

      When will it be back?

Why can’t Hotmail fix “vacation reply”? Hotmail needs to stop the so-called “improvements” and make vacation reply available.

I am seriously stressed about this as I have just set up a small business and I am getting lots of contacts but will be on vacation in a couple of weeks. When will this be sorted and does anyone know how i can get round this?

When the heck is Hotmail going to get the vacation auto-reply fixed???? It’s been well over a month and still nothing!!!!! Since I actually pay for this account instead of using one of the various free ones, I expect a little more than this half-a$$ service! I simply want a mail account that works as it should and not cost me even more by not being able to respond to my clients!

I cannot believe that hotmail cannot get a handle on this. This is rediculous. I use this account for work. Guess I will have to find a different free account to use. Hotmail-you suck.

When do you expect the auto-reply option to return? I urgently need it.
    Thanks,
