This article will walk you through all the steps required turning off HTTS or SSL to fix this problem.
How To:

  2. Login with your Windows Live ID (Hotmail ID) and select Don’t use HTTPS automatically and click on Save to disable HTTPS for your Hotmail inbox, calendar, and contacts.
    Disable HTTS for Windows Live

Thank you guys, I’ve had a similar problem while trying to set up outlook in a new version of MS Office 2010. I bought it from the manufacturer at http://buyoffice.microsoft.com/usa so I knew it shouldn’t be software issue but was quite baffled for about a week. your article has actually helped me a lot, now I know what the issue is.

Ditto. What’s the use of having SSL option for msn connection if Outlook can’t/won’t even connect using a secured layer? Unless there’s somekind of security happening in the MAPI protocol that MS isn’t telling anyone… :-|

Interesting, but isn’t the result that without an https connection one’s e-mail is more susceptible to interception and hacking? If so, to what extent? Thanks in advance…. Eric
