Microsoft launched Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 worldwide and also announced that Silverlight 4 will be release to web (RTW) later in the week. Together, these technologies simplify the entire development process, enabling developers to target new platforms and build high-quality applications.

Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 have something for every developer. The new editor, now using Windows Presentation Foundation, delivers a more flexible, feature-rich environment that supports concepts such as the use of multiple monitors. This enables a developer to have one monitor with code, another with the user interface designer, and yet another with database structure.

I did get an answer from Microsoft about this –

The Express Editions are still free. However, they require users to register after 30 days.

If you’d like to register the product now, simply click Help -> Register Product, and complete the registration wizard. At the end, you’ll be provided with the 25 character key which will permanently unlock the product.

So, then, what does this mean (copy & pasted from the license agreement (VWD Express 2010)):

    b. Trial Edition. The initial installation of the software is a trial edition. You may convert your trial rights at any time by obtaining a product key from Microsoft.  The trial software will present conversion options to you thirty (30) days after you install the trial software. After the expiration of the 30-day trial period, without conversion, the trial software will stop running.

I was about to install VWD 2010 Express, and noticed that the license agreement calls this a TRIAL edition, good for 30 days, after which I should expect promptings for a conversion process, ie. obtaining a key from Microsoft. If I’m understanding this right, I’m not sure why Microsoft’s website still calls it free…

Visual Studio Express edition is free and it doesn’t expire after 30 days.
