Google has enhanced its chatting capabilities in Gmail and now allows users to chat with AIM users even if you don’t have AIM account.

Microsoft did the same and integrated Facebook chat in Messenger. So it seems Google is getting inspired with Microsoft idea and following the same to increase activity in Gmail.

Now you can add your AIM buddies in to your Gmail chat list just like you would add Gmail or Google Talk contact. To invite them to chat simply type their screen name into your Chat roster’s search field (i.e. example555@aol.com) and click Invite to chat. Once your contact accepts your invitation you’ll be able to start chatting.

AOL has created a tool that imports your AIM contacts into your Gmail account so that you don’t have to re-add your contacts one by one. Read their blog post to learn more.
